I am getting the same results when trying to upload new auctions. This error happens after hitting the start button. This error occurs when attempting to any function that accesses the Webidz database, whether it is upload or download.

Admin, the above posts in this thread have me kinda nervous. I am assuming they are referring to the auction manager update 2.05 that was announced. If you remember, when I first started using WAM, I had some problems with installing it and then when I got a message about updates, I did them and lost half of each individual template I had already set up. Should I be worried that this may happen again? And if I was to backup all my inventory on WAM, where would you recommend I save it to so that it will be easily retrievable if I do lose half my templates. And I am not referring to say 6 out of 12 templates, I mean half of each of the template fields/page is scrunched up and or erased.

I planned on working in WAM all morning but until I hear from Admin, I'm not going to even open it for fear of losing all the data I have.

All of your data is saved in one file. It is in the WAM data directory and it is an mdb file extension. I forget the file name and am not home to look it up.

After I experienced the problem with the new version I renamed that directory and reinstalled the original software. I also moved the MDB file over from the renamed new version to the reinstalled original version and had no problems with data loss, corruption, or anything else. I also uploaded the auctions created in 2.05 with the 1.49 software.

Just copy this MDB file from the data directory and you should have no problems. It is the only file that needs to be backed up (at least that is what my testing shows).

Let's pretend I am computer illiterate. Where do I find this data file? I would like to save my data to my c drive or into my documents. Is that feasible? How do i do it?

elkaye

OK. Pretending you are computer illiterate. I do have to assume a few things though. Hopefully you know how to get into Windows Explorer and how to navigate in it. If so, the file is located in C:\Program Files\WAM 1.49\data\data.mdb.

This assumes that you installed it on your C drive and in a directory called WAM 1.49. If not, replace those with the drive you installed it to and the name of the directory you installed it to.

Once you find this file called data.mdb (there is only 1 file in the data diretory) you can then copy ot to wherever you decide you want to keep your backup. If you later need your backup, you can then copy it from your backup place to this directory. If you intend to do this, then you may want to consider backing up this file every time you add more auctions to WAM.

Hope this helps.

OK Joe, I found the data file on my c drive. Does it make any difference that it is a file that my computer cannot open? Or can I open it in another format like Word or something? I also copied it but did not paste or move it anywhere yet, because if I cannot open it, it doesn't matter. My bigger concern I guess is simply to backup all the items I currently have in my WAM inventory, and be able to retrieve them if these updates truly do have a bug issue. I put a lot of work into creating my templates, really don't want to have to start over.

elkaye

No, you most likely will not be able to open this file. It is an MDB file and requires Microsoft Access to open (and even then there are mays they can prevent it from being opened directly). Just copy and paste this file somewhere else. Then if there is ever a problem with WAM where you lose your templates, just copy this file back and they should all be there.

piazzapizza
03-14-2008, 07:59 AM
I think I understand. Gonna go to my c drive and copy the file. Gonna paste it into my documents. Then I'll open WAM and do the updates. If the result is screwed up templates etc, I simply go to my documents, copy the file I pasted there and paste it back to the file on my c drive. Is that correct? Also, I guess when I open WAM, before doing the updates, I should backup what I have there now. Should I do the backup and save it to both my c drive and my documents?

elkaye
03-14-2008, 08:01 AM
Yes, that is essentially correct. I am not sure what you mean by save it to both My Documents and C drive. The My Documents is part of yoru C drive.

I would definitley back that up right now before doing any further work in WAM. It can't hurt! Then if there is a problem later (unless already corrupt) you should just be able to restore this file.

Backing up every once in a while, or before an update is always a good idea. You would want to save it somewhere where you could remember. Possibly in the original install folder. That way it is out of your way, but you can always get to it. Program issues or reinstalls will not affect or modify backup files in any way.

Due to the other issues reported recently, you may want to wait to update your version.

I know My Documents is part of my c drive, I guess what i meant was that to find that mdb file, i did not have to open my documents to find it. Maybe I should create a new folder titled WAM auctions or something like that.

Copying the data.mdb as elkay has suggested is something that would definitely work to restore previous data, but there are steps involved that some do not understand, and has the potential to cause update issues for some version updates. The backup auctions from the file menu essentially does the same thing, storing the auctions and users data in a backup file. Then you would select the restore option from the file menu to re-populate auction and user info.

The data.mdb stores a variety of information. Sometimes updates require additional information recorded here, so it has the possibility of creating conflicts for upgrade purposes if copying of the db file is used for backup. But using this file to reinstall and backup the original version would work all the time.

Thanks Admin, I will open WAM, do a backup to a new folder but hold off on the updates. But one question. When I open WAM for the 1st time since the new version release, it is going to prompt me to update correct, and i will have the option to say no to that prompt correct?

admin
03-14-2008, 08:31 AM
Phil,

Yes, it should give you a prompt saying there is an update available. You should be able to just click the cancel or do not update button. Off hand I cannot remember exactly what it says, but it does give you an option.

It was a popup window saying there is a new updated version and recommending a download. I than had the 2 option keys, yes or no. Of course I chose no based on your advice. And the version I currently have is 1.4.9.11

Last question, my backup, do you recommend creating a new folder? I think that might be easier to remember if I title it something like My Wam Backup

You could create a folder in "my documents", and name it WAM backup. Then when you save backups to there, you could name it something like wam_bup1.4.9_031408... or something similar. That way you can tell "at a glance" the version and date of the backup. Then when you have multiple backups, you will know what each contains.

The method you described was actually stated very well, and would work most of the time. We already present enough issues for the users of WAM... we just want to try to limit the amount of these issues if possible. We thank you all for your patience, and for not getting too frustrated with us.

OK, I created the empty folder in My Documents. But in WAM, when I go to File and click on backup, it asks for a name. Is that where I type in the new folder name? I don't see where it is going to ask me where I want to backup to?

When backing up you would click the folder icon, then browse your pc and find the folder you want to save in and open it. You would then enter the name for your backup, then click the backup button.

Unfortunately, I did not have the software in front of me. It is always better to use a built in backup/restore method than it is to copy files, however, I did not even know that existed. It is great info to have.

I'm thinking I will let you folks work out the bugs, then I will grab the update. I like Phil's wording "Let's pretend I am computer illiterate", no pretending here. I have everything backed up on a flash drive, so it can not be messed up. Although I do know how to go back and do a restore. So atleast I would not be out everything.

I will be keeping an eye on this topic, so let me know when it is all clear to download.

Bidding you success, with Admin on this it should be all taken care of by Monday, if not earlier. ;)

I have done further testing this evening. It seems that if you download version 2.05 from the download link (http://www.webidz.com/auctionmanager.php) and install a fresh copy, then it works fine. If you follow the upgrade link that pops up when you open version 1.49 then you get errors when connecting.

A tutorial follows. If you do not consider yourself computer literate I do not recommend you follow this, but wait for the auto-upgrade to work properly.

The steps I followed to make version 2.05 work are as follows:

1. Open version 1.49. When asked if you wish to upgrade, choose no.
2. Backup your database. Go to File-Backup Auctions. You will be asked for a filename. Click the blue folder, choose where you want to put your backup and give it a name. Do not change the .xml file type. Go to the folder you chose and verify that your backup exists.
3. Extract all of the files in your new download to c:\program files. This will automatically put the files in c:\program files\WAM 2.05.
4. Open Windows Explorer and browse to c:\program files\WAM 2.05.
5. Run Setup.exe. It will ask if you wish to remove or repair version 1.49. Choose remove (ONLY if you know your backup is made properly.
6. Run Setup.exe again. This will install version 2.05.
7. Run your new version of WAM. It will say this is your first time running this program, please fill in info. Cancel this.
8. Go to File-Restore Auctions. Click on the blue folder icon and browse to your backup and select the file.
9. Click Restore. This will import all of your info from your backup.
10. Download Master Data. If you get a connection error, go to Tools-Preferences and retype your password (I had to).

DONE.

If you have any questions about this please ask! I'll try to help you out.

I think I could follow your instructions Joe but just to be safe, I'm gonna wait till Admin gives the all clear signal before I download the new version. And even when Admin does give the all clear, I might just let someone else download first to see if they report any new bugs.........:D

admin

The bugs that some members are currently experiencing is not a bug with v2.05, but rather an update issue with 1.49. There is a feature that will not allow users to install older versions. So uninstalling and reinstalling 1.49 would not work. There are a few options available to resolve this issue.

Option #1) Back up your auctions and user data from the file menu. Uninstall version 1.49, then install version 2.05. Open the new version of auction manager, then enter username and password when prompted. Download master data from the file menu. Now restore auctions and user data from the file menu. Everything will work now, and all your auctions, templates and preferences will be back in this version.

Option #2) What Joe has posted in this thread (post #33) is one option. He described this process very well, so I will not repeat.

Option #3) This consists of replacing a few of the files in the auction manager install folder. You would navigate to the directory that you have the auction manager installed. The default path to this install would be C:/Program Files/WAM 1.49/ (where C is your hard drive). Then place the files that we provide you into this directory. If you receive an overwrite prompt, choose yes to replace the files. If you want these files, please send an email to admin@webidz.com and we will send you the files.
