Auction Buying Safety and Protection

With everyone beginning the 'rush' to the holidays, perhaps it is time we discuss for a moment buyer safety. Most of these suggestions you all know and follow, but a refresher might be in order for some of us. If anyone has anything to add please feel free to join in!

Let me start out by saying that even if a seller has not built feedback on a site yet, if you recognize the seller's name, ID, 'handle', chances are that seller will give the same great service and dependability in all his/her online sales, regardless of site affiliation.

You may also contact the seller about a product or service to learn more about the person.

But, lets face it,if you are dealing with someone you have never met,you can't see, and know nothing about it can be a little scary! There are some steps you can take to protect yourself from a possibly unscrupulous seller. A lot of the auction sites today provide various protective policies for the patrons.

A little groundwork and common sense on your part will go a long way to protecting yourself. Most auctions today have a 'feedback' system with which you can check on a buyer or seller's track record. Take a look at the buyer or sellers feedback and see how they have performed in the past. Did the buyer send the funds quickly, were they fast to reply to e-mail notices, as a seller, did they ship promptly, was the merchandise as described, how was their packaging?

This will give you a very good indication of the calibar person you are dealing with.

It is commonplace for sellers to request payment prior to shipping. Of the many ways to pay for your items, the credit card is one of the safest choices. Checks, money orders and cashiers checks provide little recourse if you have been swindled. They are a last resort but there are a lot of sellers who are not setup for credit card purchases so there will be times when you must use other forms of payment.

Several on-line pay systems are available that allow you to e-mail your payment thru a secure environment. We are using them with a great deal of success. Buyers do not have to wait for checks to clear and sellers have payment within minutes and are able to ship the same day in most cases. I like the fact that you only give your credit card info out once,at sign up. From then on it is recorded so you simply exchange funds with no additional credit card information exchanged over the net.

Now with that all said lets' all make this a great and SAFE buying and selling seaon online!

I am concered. I just won and purchased a pink laptop today from a seller on here. Laurel56 and in the auction it says that they purchased it for their step daughter only she doesn't want it. Well enought said. I was looking to night and the very same auction was sold again. Same description. I'm wondering just how many they bought for their step daughter and if maybe I had been take for. And if I will recieve my item.
I payed through paypal.
What kind of policy or protection do you give if this is a scammer.
I payed and it still says unpaid on my bidding/winning link.

Very worried now:eek:

I know that on Ebay Pay-Pal had different dollar amounts for protection (I assume what kind of account you had with Pay-Pal). Admin-Would that be the same for this site?? It would make buyers feel better in such cases to know that if it was a scammer or non performing seller at least you could get your money back through pay-pal up to a certain $ amount.
This seller also has another comp on a 1 day auction and has bids on it. Auction reads bought for herself but received one for her birthday also. Stock photos.
Lets hope for the best tazz and that this seller has not made it back to the comp to get the sale notice.

That does sound a little suspicious.

Regardless of where payment is made from, you still have protections through Paypal. They have a chargeback process in the event of a non-performing seller. The payment status on WeBidz only updates if the seller has direct pay enabled, and payment was made through the site.

We are going to look into this members account, to see if there are any red flags. We will get back with you very shortly.

I know this won't help if something has already occurred, but on alternative sites, if they
do not have a recent and past sales record, I don't buy. That is why we all (IMHO) are better
off to display our sales records from other sites, that way folks KNOW we are going to be
the same everywhere, or sure try to be. I pray all turns out right for you Tazzy!!
We also buy from forum members, as we feel we know them!! :)

Tazz,

We have looked at their account, and do not see any of the normal red flags. But them manually relisting the item 30 minutes after you purchased... hmmm, doesn't sound good. We do not normally recommend a chargeback this early, but we think this would be wise in this case. That way your funds are froze until resolution is provided. Otherwise they could possibly transfer the funds out of their Paypal account.

We will be looking into their account further, and possibly placing a temporary hold on their account until we can get some answers.
