EBay Feedback Cutoff Kicking In, Sellers Angry
Posted by Alexander Wolfe
When eBay (NSDQ: EBAY) announced back in January that it was pulling the plug on its longtime policy of letting sellers leave negative feedback on buyers, those self-same sellers were royally peeved. Now that the policy is set to go into effect, on Monday, May 19, the ire of eBay sellers shows no sign of abating. Boy, are they p.o.'d. Here's what they're telling me.
First, some quick background. As I previously blogged, in EBay's Feedback Changes Are Bad News For Buyers, eBay's stated reason for the change is: The previous system prevented buyers from leaving honest Feedback since they feared retaliation from the sellers if they left a negative.
But sellers aren't buying that explanation. Initially, the thinking amongst the eBay user community was the policy somehow was intended to prop up the site's sagging performance, possibly by making eBay friendly for buyers. (That stemmed from the fact that buyers were widely perceived as being intimidated into leaving good feedback on sellers, because if they didn't, sellers would retaliate.)
However, as things shook out, the received wisdom tilted more toward the idea that eBay's concern for the average buyer and seller wasn't quite so nuanced. Mostly, the feedback change -- as well as a bunch of revisions in the seller fee structure -- was designed to make eBay more attractive to large sellers. Sadly, the newfound big-seller friendliness comes at the apparent expense of the smaller sellers who made eBay a big success in the first place.
Still, times change. What hasn't changed, since January, is the vitriol of the average eBay seller, who is mightily ticked at the new feedback policy. Here are some of the comments I've received in response to my earlier eBay post. What really hammers home the anger meme is the fact that the post, dated Feb 7, has received comments right up through yesterday (that's very unusual; commenting typically peters out a few days after a post goes up). Anyway, here's some of what they're saying:
"I used to buy and sell on eBay all the time. Not anymore. This change is completely unnecessary."
"Without the sellers there is no eBay. I am one of the thousands they lost due to their completely inept management. All the sellers should at least try the competition and put eBay's monopoly mentality to the test."
"I'm a seller on eBay and have been for a few years. The new feedback system bothers me because I can't leave negative for buyers who don't pay me. I would expect no less than a negative feedback if I took a buyer's money and then decided not to ship the item."
"I will still sell items on eBay, because eBay is still the #1 place. But go around and ask sellers, does anyone like their new stupid policy?"
"As soon as this change takes place, I am DONE with eBay!"
"We have been selling and buying at eBay for 10 years. These new changes are horrible for sellers and buyers."
"I think this is really about FEAR. So many eBay sellers do not know what it is like to actually provide customer service. This is evident when you make a purchase on eBay or ask a question about something for sale on eBay and you get no response."
"Both Buyer and Seller feedback has been a long-standing cornerstone that has been one of the key reasons for eBay's success. I have had enough. Not only because of the feedback but also the constant hiking in prices."
To be fair and balanced, here are a few comments from the other side of the argument, favoring eBay's change:
"I believe that eBay really needed to do something about feedback, and of course the solution would involve stepping on some toes. I am so sick of having to worry about retailiatory feedback as a buyer--my eBay record was ruined 6 years ago when I bought a product and it was missing a piece."
"There have been a mixed response over this eBay's feedback changes.... But these changes can be justified and it shouldn't affect consumers."
So what do you think about eBay's no policy: Deal or no deal?

Thank you for your insight on this subject. I actually found Webidz after eBay increased their final value fees and decided that sellers cannot leave a negative feedback for buyers who did not pay for an item they bought. "Big Brother" eBay has missed the point, and forget that there will be no buyer without a seller.
This is what happen when a company is too big and lack of serious competition. I hope Webidz will be a big competition for eBay. This will make eBay to think twice before they make stupid and unnecessary changes. I have reduced my listing on eBay to just 50 items per month.

Yeppers, Joy, IMHO, ebay does not have a CLUE who their customers (the sellers) are
or how they should be treated. The buyer is the customer of the seller NOT ebay..they do not
seem to grasp this at all.
JB & I were SILVER level power sellers for a while and regular power sellers for years! Since
we sold low profit/high volume items, and the FVF prices continued to go up and up and up
to satisfy the stock holders and (for sure) the deep-pocket millionaire admins at ebay, we began
to close everything at ebay at the end of 2007.
Will they ever see the light? Don't think so... as long as 'DONNA-WHO' is at the helm!!

My FB went up and it's back to 100%. I guess that's supposed to make me ignore the fact that since I'm not a power seller that I now have absolutely no seller protection and I get to pay more in fees for this non-existant protection! That's OK tho, I've been slowly weaning myself off the greedy giant and it's lil brother feepal too!

Mine is at 100% also, Bama..but you know yourself, with their very distorted DSR
rates and buyers being allowed to ruin reputations at a whim..who knows what our reps.
would be a year from now..? They do not have a clue to business.
I saw a neg. a lady got yesterday (already!) from a buyer that actually said "Nice neat packing, fast
shipping, used recycled bubble packing!"(they are SUPPOSED to be recycled)
that is just cruel to allow that IMHO. The seller had very high DSR ratings and 100% FB before
yesterday!
I noticed one of our top sellers that reports on PSU, (powersellersunite.com) reported this AM
that she did not see why FB was so important as compared to fees and such...(DUH!) :D
Is she not aware that a neg or three can destroy a small business?

Hi there Deals, and welcome to Webidz and to the forums!! Hope you will stop by often and join in the conversation,. games,. auction talk and fun...:D
Well..I just noticed something REALLY weird..(this is not a seller I have bought from,. but one I do know well.) I noticed that since the changes kicked in..He has '0' negatives showing..about 500 positive,. 3 neutrals, but NOW has 96% feedback.,.How is that POSSIBLE? Does anyone know? (his DSR rate is fair to very good). ODD!

well ebay can put in what thay want the sellers do not see
how the costumers rates you so thay (ebay) can do
what ever thay want. thay are fixing it so that the seller loses
thier powerseller and loses thier discounts and then has to use
paypal then thay can hold their money for 21 days while thay earn
interest on it.
also when ebay explains to the costumer how the ratings work
thay say that a 4 is good but ebay considers a 4 not good can
you say scam??? :D
thay also send buyers emails asking why thay did not leave feedback
and tries to push them to file a claim
Its all a Scam By ebay or should i say greedbay?? :)

Here's what I see, I was not a big seller by any means, only about 4 or 5 sales in the 3 months I was there. Ebay made no "real" money off of me. Now alot of sellers are leaving. I have been getting about 15 emails a week from Ebay, anything from buying a cd to show me how to sell on Ebay or how to be an Ebay millionaire. Now when I was there, I never got 1 email saying anything like that. So here is what I see, Ebay IS being affected, or they would not be trying so hard to recruit sellers to come or come back. Just Kat's 2 cents.

I still for the life of my can not see how that man could have a 96% rating (just since May 19th) with NO NEGATIVE feedback! Ebay just gets uglier and uglier..THEIR admins have to support their private (various and PLURAL) mansions and private staffing,. I guess!) Little tiny sellers like JB & I were to the point when we left, of trying to decide if we could make 1-2 bucks (per item) after all fees and pay/pal.:(

Looks like Ace that seller might have had it coming as it is buyers with alot of feedback giving him bad feedback! But then again, it's funny how they all sound so much the same! You don't think that is Ebay little way of getting rid of certain sellers they don't want?

I am an ebay small seller and still have a store. I am gradually moving everything over to here. I am so glad I found you guys. Now it's up to us to make THIS site the NEW BIG BROTHER. Look out eBay!! We're coming on strong. You can keep all your big stores and feedback.:D I am trying to talk my friend into moving. She doesn't have a store but she is a powerseller and seems really scared to leave eBay. I'll never go to ebay for anything and I emailed all my customers to let them know where I am going and they are more than willing to tag along and shop here. Keep up the good work guys, I know I will.
Be sure to visit my store here and I have been looking around here too. Love it!! http://www.webidz.com/22102,user_id,shop

Lana,
You got a hot topic here darlin.
I had no idea that Ebay was up to its old tricks again. They change things so much that nobody can keep up with all of their upgrades and "improvements". It seems to me that regardless of what they do they only care about the buyers there and not the sellers. It was the sellers that made Ebay rich and it the seller that they screw over and over and over.

I don't have a click on it!
Since Christmas my sales at Ebay consistently went down. When I was researching similar items and the'ending soonest' option on Ebay I would sometimes see only 1 item selling at last minute out of 25!!!!I also noticed on my own sales that I was selling only 1 out of 15 or so, which when adding up all the Ebay fees for the unsold listings, I wasnt breaking even by the sales I did make.
I joined plunderhere last year but rarely went there til I had a few sales that were relisted since last July. Then through their banner advertisements I found this website and likewise joined.
With the Ebay feedback changes, my score went up nearly 30 points as I had repeat customers that were previously counted only once, so that part of the changes there I was glad about.
Their other reasons such as eliminating retaliatory negative feedbacks is good in theory, but it makes me simultaneoulsy take feedbacks with a grain of salt as bad sellers may be able to look better and victimize more people, but I am hoping that is only to be an exception to a good rule.
I purchased a laptop from Canada after contacting the seller who said the pc would arrive in 2-3 days from payment and that shipping was US$49.95 which I paid instantly at auctions end.Within a month of never receiving the computer I noticed the same one selling repeatedly by the same seller but at higher winning bids, which meant he had them but wasnt complying with the lower winning bidders, yet still taking their money as expressed by dozens of negative feedbacks.
I was more concerned with not getting ripped off so I opened a dispute with Ebay/paypal after seller failed to respond to more for over 2 more weeks. I was lucky because he also failed to respond to Paypal so they ruled in my favor and refunded my money so even though I didnt get the laptop, at least my money was returned which could have been a problem since it was out of country.
I also didnt want any retaliatory feedback so under a + I wrote instructions to buyers to be prepared to need Paypal intervention as their was a language barrier with seller and failure to communicate once an item was paid for.I didnt get into name calling as he already had enough of those from other dissatisfied customers. I was able to also point out that all those who gave positive feedbacks were on sales over a certain amount which demonstrated the sellers willingness to put off low bidding winners.I had won my laptop for under $200 while those who consistently received the same laptop paid over $300. I think the seller was finally barred.
So far I have managed to keep my feedback 100% positive by communicating quickly with buyers and shipping as soon as possible as well as giving shipping discounts, partial refunds on shipping for some multiple purchases and or giving rebate coupons for future purchases {when they buy and pay I send partial paypal refunds] So my customers have been satisfied.Even when one customer mistakenly purchased an item thinking it was to be larger than stated [she misread auction] I replaced the item with a larger version at no extra charge and let her keep the initial item as well.Striving for customer satisfaction may bite into profits, but it does wonders for reputation which is important online and anywhere.
Anyway even with the elimination of negative feedback, the message about and item [ the laptop in ths case] can be made to warn others, even if it has to be done under the cloak of a positve or neuitral feedback mark.
I love to sell online, but with the raising daily of gas prices since the holidays, it seems to me that overall sales for every type of item has dropped considerably in and out of stores and at website auctions.
Now I get excited just to see an auction sell, even though it is often at minimum...

I haven't done a lot of buying or selling on e-bay, but in my humble opinion, it is a mistake for them to allow only positive feedback. There are people who will take advantage of sellers if they know that there won't be any negative repercussions for not paying when they buy something. I hate to see anyone get ripped off, but it's bound to happen. Hopefully people will move over to Webidz to do their buying and selling.

The no negative feedback for buyers rule is hogwash. Since that went into effect, my percentage of non-paying buyers has more than doubled. I don't leave them any feedback because I'm not going to leave them a positive rating to leave negative comments. A lot of people don't read comments if a person has all positive. The other thing is the item can't be relisted for 15 days until the dispute is closed in case the buyer finally decides to pay. Since eBay has chosen to favor buyers, they should probably realize that without sellers, there can be no buyers. :D What goes around comes around. eBay is having to lay off staff because their profits are down. Hmmm, I don't think it's entirely due to the economy ;)

I agree. I have not been listing there. They keep changing things supposedly for sellers, but all the sellers seem to not like the changes. I do not believe they can keep it up they way they are going. The more improvements they make, the more sellers they lose. The feedback change is the biggest bunch of crock I have ever seen.

[I just listed my first item on here today. I want to try and wean myself off of ebay. I've had it with their policies...especially the feedback rule. They said it was going to be harder for buyers to leave negatives for sellers which is not true. I just found out the hard way that even non-paying bidders can leave you negative feedback. The only reason it was removed was because the guy actually stated that he refused to pay in the comments section. Also, for the buyer requirements you can no longer choose to refuse to sell to a buyer with 0 feedback-only ones with negative feedback. Now, since we haven't been able to leave them negatives for over a year how is that applicable?? Anyway, hopefully this site will be more of a positive experience for me.

Hi,
Welcome to WeBidz. I'm wondering if you have set up a store, and if so, would you put put a link to it in your posts. You can have a clickable WeBidz banner made. There are others here who make personalized banners. Or you can just put in your store URL. We want to be able to find you easily. :) Also check out Repatoo for a feedback icon. It will consolidate your feedback from any other sites where you have sold. Also check out Revolution Money Exchange. They are a great PayPal alternative as there are no fees for any transactions.
If you have questions about anything, post them in the forum. Many helpful people here. Glad you have joined us.

Ebay seems determined to self destruct. This site looks like a great alternative.

Hi there Applebug~! A warm welcome and much success is our wish
for you here at the WB.. I am sending you a few WEBEX points to help you to start
accumulating them. You may buy things with them (when you bid on WEBEX
auctons) (only) or you may have a webex auction to get started and to accumulate
more points. It also introduces folks to your auctions. You provide the product AND
the shipping cost when you sponsor a webex auction. The biggest way to accumulate
points is by being a active forum participant.
Let us know if we may assist you in anyway.:)

I got a negative feedback from a buyer on ebay regarding shipping cost. The problem is I already stated clearly the fixed shipping charge for each of my items. If the buyer agrees to it he is freed to buy or not. I never forced him/her to buy.
What I don't understand is why is he/she complained about the shipping cost after he had agreed to buy it in the first place? He/she had his/her choice to buy or not.
I already offered to do full refund for the item price and partial refund for the shpping cost to the buyer but to no avail. Off course, I ask him to return the good back to me first before I can refund his/her money. Is there something wrong with it?

Certainly not your fault. You had the shipping charge listed. That was always a gripe of mine too. You list the shipping charge, the buyer buys and then complains. The shipping charge may have been actual cost, but the buyer still complains and leaves a negative. The anonymous DSR's on eBay are unfair because you can't contest them. You went beyond what a lot of sellers would do to satisfy your customer. You could request that eBay remove that feedback. I don't know if they will comply. Although the feedback is unfair, it probably is not derogatory. It's worth a try to put in a request so that the negative doesn't follow you everywhere.
Good luck here. We love WeBidz...the friendly auction site :D

Juara, My hubby recently made a sale on Feebay, and charged
NO SHIPPING charge..he shipped very carefully the very same day. The buyer gave him
a low score in DSR, for FREE, PERFECT shipping..he sells little, so this knocked
him from a 5.0 to a 4.8~! :(

I have 2 negatives and a neutral feedback at feebay for the same reason. I ship within 12 hours or less of cleared payment, and feebay would not remove the negative....even though it was well below their shipping price guidlines. I no longer give instant feedback on feebay just for that reason....I pulled all my auctions, and closed two accounts there. Still have one sitting empty...

You can find many things for sale online, but it is important that you are aware of the many scams going on in the Internet. Be very careful when dealing with online sellers especially auction sellers because we know it is not a face-to-face transaction. Chances are you could end up transacting with online rogue.
Try to do some research first and try to know the reputation of the individual you are dealing with. There are many websites in the internet that can show you how to check out the validity of companies or reputation of various online sellers. Try to look for forums and comments in the net for an additional info. I recommend...
NOT sure what this has to do with the thread starter: "Ebay Feedback changes kick in today!" but I have removed the link to your auction site..
Do NOT do this again. It is called SPAM.
Thank you~!
